Timex's first entry into the heart rate monitor business sets itself apart from its competitors offerings by employing the latest in digital FM technology. Most heart rate monitors presently on the market use a chest strap to transmit analogue signals from a transmitter worn around the chest to a monitor typically worn on the wrist. The Ironman Fitness System sends its signals from the chest strap to the watch utilising digital FM technology, affording increased accuracy due to its superior resistance to electromagnetic interference from sources like treadmills or overhead power lines. Independent testing has shown the Timex Ironman Triathlon Digital Heart Rate Fitness System to be within 3 beats-per-minute of ECG (EKG) precision. Digital technology also allows the Ironman Fitness System to synchronise the signal from the chest strap to the watch avoiding "cross talk" from other heart rate monitors. Cross talk is a common problem with current monitors that pick-up signals from other heart rate monitors being used in close proximity (like the starting line of a race or a crowded gym), a problem particular to analogue models. In addition, all other heart rate monitors send a signal for every heart beat and then rely on the monitor to calculate the actual rate. Timex heart rate monitors use exclusive "smart sensor" technology to calculate the heart rate from the transmitter and then send a signal to the watch, further increasing accuracy and lengthening battery life. Unlike some leading brands, the batteries in both the watch and transmitter are replaceable. Speaking of accuracy, professional triathlete and multiple Ironman Triathlon champion, Scott Tinley, says: " I've tried every heart rate monitor available in the past 20 years.
