220 Magazine the best triathlon magazine in the country has just voted the Timex HRM 50 / 100 Lap the star buy against such brands as Polar, ProActiv and CardioSport. It states "The Timex approach to HRMs is very different to some of the other manufacturers who start with heart rate and then add other features. Timex start with a watch / stopwatch and then add heart rate features. As a result they look and feel like a watch and you might want to wear them all the time. Nevertheless, when you are using them as HRMs, the heart rate display is small and not very easy to read(1). Timex's main innovation concerns the chest strap transmitter which although slightly heavy and bulky is extremely comfortable and uses digital technology as opposed to analogue signals. Therefore it is claimed that there is less chance of picking up electromagnetic interference from things like power cables and treadmills or "cross talk" for other nearby HRMs thereby ensuring a more consistently accurate HRM. However what impressed me most about the 50 lap model was the ability to stop the stopwatch at the end of a lap or repetition and so record not only the lap time but also the heart rate at that time. This is of infinitely more use to a serious athlete doing a structured repetition session than the usual limitation of only recording heart rates at pre-set intervals (which don't coincide with lap or repetition rimes) and max min and average heart rates. My one regret is that this HRM does not (yet) have a PC interface to allow this date to be quickly downloaded and presented. Both HRMs come in a cheap plastic box and lack the superior design and finish quality of the ProActiv, Cardiosport and new Polar models. But having said that they appear rugged, practical and easy to use with many good features - especially the 50 lap version which offers considerably better value for just £10 extra."
