What we say about the Polar RCX5 heart rate monitor ~ the TRIATHLETES heart rate monitor :
YES !!!! you really can use this while swimming - and get a heart rate graph from your swims
SUMMARY :
The Polar RCX5 is Polar’s newest multisport watch. The RCX5 is designed for triathletes aiming to record data from the swim to the bike and then finally on the run. You’ll start off in the swim with the Polar HR monitor working without issue underwater – the hybrid chest transmitter will transmit heart rate data to the Polar RCX5 - even when SWIMMING ! Once you’ve exited the water you can quickly change sports into cycling mode (just press bottom left to PAUSE, then select CYCLE....).
Please note: if like Tristan at heartratemonitor.co.uk - you don't do the SWIM bit, this is still a very valid heart rate monitor. HIGHLY recommended for anyone who runs / bikes / swims or any combination of two..
The Polar RCX5 will automatically pair with the optional Polar W.I.N.D. sensors such as a speed and cadence sensor – or, the new G5 GPS pod. This pod allows you to record GPS location information as part of your training records. Finally, as you transition to the run you can continue using the G5 GPS pod, or you can pair with the Polar Footpod, which gathers both speed while indoors on a trainer, but also cadence information as well, whether indoors or outside. The RCX5 is a great way to capture HR and other metrics across all three sports – something that only Polar devices can achieve. It is hard to stress how EASY and WELL THOUGHT out this watch is for multisport and changes of discipline... it really has been designed for multisport use in mind ~ and it will even upload via a PC or MAC !!
Who is the Polar RCX5 for ? RUNNER? YES ! CYCLISTS who want a wrist mounted unit (as opposed to a stem / handlebar mount)? YES ! Swimmers ? YES ! ~ However, it is especially aimed at the TRIATHLETES / DUATHLETES ~ multisport users who want a ONE watch solution. When uploaded to the Polarpersonaltrainer website it gives VERY CLEAR indication of whether or not you atre UNDER / OVER TRAINING, by way of Polar's TRAINING LOAD calculations. Tristan Haskins (director at BHIP Ltd) had been using the RCX5 for 2 weeks and it already had a very clear knowledge of his training patterns, clearing showing days he needed to train harder, rest are continue as normal.

Customisable - Sports specific Data views:
The Polar RCX5 allows you to specify your personalised view of data fields dependent on your sport. There are 6 data pages to configue. For more Polar RCX5 screen shots - click here The Polar RCX5 data pages display 4 lines of data ( displayed one line on top of each other).
These are the available data parameters to choose from : Average Heart Rate, Average Speed, Average Cadence, Cadence, Calories, Calories per hour, Countdown timer, Distance, Heart Rate, Lap Distance, Lap Time, Max Speed, Speed (pace), Stopwatch, Time of Day, Trip, Zone Pointer (bar graph - realtime - of time spent in each one of 5 sports zones)
Note on LAPS... The RCX5 has an AUTO LAP feature... you can set the Polar RCX5 to auto LAP you every mile, every 2 miles or similar. At the end of the session you can review each AUTO LAP to see best, worst, average etc. While AUTO LAPPING you can still put in a MANUAL LAP. I do this when riding my ride bike. I have it set to AUTO LAP every 2 miles... but I do a MANUAL LAP when I reach a certain junction, then a certain shop and same coming back.. this gives me 4 x distinct splits on my route, plus the AUTO LAPs every 2 miles. The AUTO LAPS can be viewed independently to the MANUAL LAPS. Well done Polar.

What Polar say about the new Polar RCX5 heart rate monitor
Polar is launching the product which multisport and triathlon athletes have been waiting for – the Polar RCX5 training computer. This is a cutting-edge product ideal for endurance sports, with some exciting new features to coach you in planning, training and analyzing your performance in detail.
Knowing how hard to train can be a challenge as your condition changes every day depending on a number of factors, including your physical and mental state, stress, sleep, and previous training. The brand new ZoneOptimizer feature in the Polar RCX5 takes out the guesswork by adjusting your personal heart rate zones for every training session based on your current physiological condition. It will guide you to train at the right intensity to get the training effect you want, making your every session more effective. In addition, the Polar RCX5 gives you sport-specific training data based on your personal settings and allow you to change from one sport profile to another with just a few button presses. The RCX5 gives heart rate even in water with the new WearLink®+ Hybrid transmitter, making it ideal for triathlon.
New sensors also feature in this new product launch: The small Polar G5 GPS sensor, rechargeable via micro USB, and s3+ stride sensor with a new, firm shoe attachment which guarantees more accurate running pace and distance measurement. On the saddle, you can get your speed, distance and cadence measured by adding compatible Polar cycling sensors. With the sensor accessories, Polar RCX5 keeps up with you in the water, on the saddle, on your run, and online.
There will also be big upgrades at polarpersonaltrainer.com to support multisport athletes in their training. The new map view will allow users with the Polar G5 GPS sensor to review their training data at any point of their route. In addition, the Training Load feature can be seen as a graph, showing your cumulative training load in color coding. You can also create for yourself complete endurance training programs for running and cycling. The training programs can be synched to your Polar RCX5
