Garmin Forerunner
301 GPS unit with heart rate monitoring and speed and distance.
The Garmin ForeRunner 301 offers athletes an easy-to-read display,
ergonomic wristband, and integrated Garmin GPS sensor that provides
precise speed, distance, and pace data (expected accuracy in
excess of 96%, can be as high as 98%, depending on environment).
It's a compact, lightweight, accurate training assistant with
performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more. The Garmin
Forerunner 301 is easy to use right out of the box and delivers
the benefits of GPS technology at an affordable price. The Garmin
ForeRunner 301 uses a digital heart rate transmission system
to prevent unwanted interference from other HRM users. Garmin

This unit can also be used for monitoring a HORSE'S heart rate. With the use of a specially adapted EQUINE GIRTH strap the human chest transmitter can be comfortably fitted to the horse to provide accurate speed, distance and heart rate data. This data can be recalled on the unit post exercise, or it may be downloaded in to a PC. Comparison
between Garmin Forerunner 301 and Garmin Forerunner 305
(released March 2006) : The biggest two differences are aesthetic
and improved aerial technology. The aesthetics are just different,
the new 305 does not fit the wrist any better than the 301,
in fact, on a smaller wrist the 305 is a bit too chunky across
the wrist. The aerial technology improvement in the 305 is an
improvement, however, if most of your running is fairly rural,
with good clear vision of the sky, then the 301 is still a great
option.. and considerably cheaper. The PC software is the same.
If most of your running is in town or wooded areas, then we
would suggest the Forerunner 305.
Working out
with the Garmin Forerunner 301 means you're never alone in your
personal training, because the unit provides a Virtual Partner.
This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by
configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance.
You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing
your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you
can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

We
(BHIP Ltd team) used the Garmin Forerunner 201/301 for the London
Flora HALF Marathon in Silverstone. Using the Virtual Partner
it paced Tristan (BHIP Director) to within 20 seconds of his desired
time... 20 seconds faster that is :-)

Can be used for equine - horse monitoring
It is possible to use the Garmin Forerunner products while horse riding. For monitoring heart rate and speed - distance data we would recommend either the Garmin Forerunner 301 (in areas where there is clear sky, no tree cover etc) or the Garmin Forerunner 305 for exceptional reception, even under light tree cover. We recommend the GIRTH strap available from www.equinefitness.co.uk - specifically made to hold Polar, Garmin and CardioSport human heart rate monitor chest transmitters to the horses' chest. |
|
Important
note: When used outside,
suburban residential, on water, away from dense tree cover, with clear
view of the sky, these GPS units are highly recommended. However, if you
are training in an area with a lot of obscured sky, for example
in a major city, London, Manchester etc, we would be cautious in recommending
the use of the Garmin / Navman / Timex GPS type SDM's due to potential
weak GPS signal from tall building shadowing. If the majority of your
time training is between tall buildings (4 storey or more) on both sides,
then it is possible you will suffer loss of satellite signal and the units'
accuracy may be compromised. If this is the case, please consider a unit
that uses FOOT POD technology like the Polar RS200SD or Suunto T6. Click
here for the results of our Garmin
Forerunner test in the Sandringham Forest. The new Garmin 205/305
GPS offer a great improvement over the older 201/301, however, we would
still recommend a FOOT POD unit if the majority of your running is in
a built up area / city.
BHIP
Ltd cannot accept a unit back for refund if it's "failure" is
due only to the training environment unless it is in 100% as new condition,
including all packaging. If you are training around a "normal"
suburban town with 2 - 3 storey buildings either side of the streets,
you should be fine. The clearer view of the sky, the higher the level
of accuracy. Please bear this in mind the first time you test the unit.

for up to two years.
- Performance
data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide
an accurate record.
- Automated

either stop, or go under a certain pace).
- Lap timer

below a pre-set level.
- The Garmin
Forerunner 301 GPS watch has a pace whistle sounds alert when
you begin travelling slower or faster than your desired pace.
- Garmin

add another dimension to your training sessions. Shows heart
rate (beats per minute) and zone (between 1 and 5)

- New
Garmin Training Centre software, please click here for more
details on the Garmin

in your workout.
- Interval
Training option.
This is one of the most valuable features on the Garmin Forerunner
201 to help improve your fitness. The Garmin Forerunner 301
can be set to provide interval alarms for both effort and rest/recovery.
These alarms can be either distance based, or time based, or
even a combination of the two. For example, eg 1) the interval
could be 1 Mile, the recovery could be 3 minutes, this could
be set to repeat 3 times. eg 2) the interval could be 5 minutes,
the recovery could be 3 minutes and the unit could repeat this
action 5 times. eg 3) the interval could be 0.5 Mile, the recovery
could be 0.25 Mile, this could be set to repeat 6 times. Interval
training is a very effective and proven method of improving
fitness and increasing running speed.

Garmin Training centre software to transfer data from your Forerunner
