Working out
with the Garmin Forerunner 101 means you're never alone in your
personal training, because the unit provides a Virtual Partner.
This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring
your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a
graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in
relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see
at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.
It has most
of the features of the Forerunner 201, but operates on
two AAA batteries (the 201 uses a rechargeable cell). Also, the
101 does NOT have PC interface functionality. (because there is
no PC option, the user cannot upgrade the firmware, as they can
on the Garmin Forerunner 201). The Garmin Forerunner 101 stores
lap histories for up to two years to provide an archive of workout
performance over time. Users can retrieve lap data for previous
workouts by date, week, month, or over a specific time interval.
For business travellers who want to train on the road, the Garmin
Forerunner 101 also doubles as a navigator. Users can mark their
hotel as a specific location, see their current position on the
plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back
to their starting point.

Important
note: When used outside,
suburban residential, on water, away from dense tree cover, with clear
view of the sky, these GPS units are highly recommended. However, if you
are training in an area with a lot of obscured sky, for example
in a major city, London, Manchester etc, we would be cautious in recommending
the use of the Garmin / Navman / Timex GPS type SDM's due to potential
weak GPS signal from tall building shadowing. If the majority of your
time training is between tall buildings (4 storey or more) on both sides,
then it is possible you will suffer loss of satellite signal and the units'
accuracy may be compromised. If this is the case, please consider a unit
that uses FOOT POD technology like the Polar RS200SD or Suunto T6. Click
here for the results of our Garmin
Forerunner test in the Sandringham Forest. The new Garmin 205/305
GPS offer a great improvement over the older 201/301, however, we would
still recommend a FOOT POD unit if the majority of your running is in
a built up area / city.
BHIP
Ltd cannot accept a unit back for refund if it's "failure" is
due only to the training environment unless it is in 100% as new condition,
including all packaging. If you are training around a "normal"
suburban town with 2 - 3 storey buildings either side of the streets,
you should be fine. The clearer view of the sky, the higher the level
of accuracy. Please bear this in mind the first time you test the unit.

site
owners comments about the Garmin Forerunner 101 GPS watch : It
may be quite large, but once on your wrist you hardly notice it.
What's great about this unit is it's ease of use and easy to read
display while running, even at pace.
Good
features, as with most of speed and distance watches, are, pace
alarm, current speed, current pace and run time. What is pretty
unique is the Garmin Forerunner 101's ability to show you real
time if you are ahead or behind pace (using the VIRTUAL PARTNER
mode) VERY USEFUL.
Technology
is moving fast and Garmin are at the cutting edge. This unit is
easy to use, highly accurate and even internally upgradable via
PC downloads, if required. We give it a very good 9/10 |
