Garmin Edge 800
HRMshop.co.uk ~ Garmin Edge 800 summary review : This is the second in the new series of Garmin Edge cyclists HRM/GPS computers. The Garmin Edge 800 takes the main FTNESS / PERFORMANCE functions of the Garmin Edge 500 and adds MAPPING and AUTOROUTING. It is slightly larger than the Edge 500 with a very CLEAR large colour LCD TOUCHSCREEN display. As with all the new Garmin GPS fitness products one of it's most appealing features is EASE OF USE. From opening the box to installing it on your bike, ready to go, takes less than just a few minutes. Please remember when considering your supplier - BHIP Ltd actually USE these products, we will help you get the very most from your new Garmin Edge 800 unit. We hope we can help.
COMPARE Garmin Edge 305 - Garmin Edge 705 - Garmin Edge 500 and Garmin Edge 800 (new window)
The Garmin Edge 800 has just 3 buttons. One (the power button) on the side of the unit, and two medium sized buttons on the front (LAP/RESET) and (STAR/STOP). Most of the functionality and control of the Garmin Edge 800 is managed via the very user friendly touch screen display.
Here are some of the KEY FEATURES of the Garmin Edge 800
- VIRTUAL PARTNER - simply tell the unit how far you want to go, and it what time, and it will pace you along
- Where To ? This is a major feature of the Edge 800. Using the base map provided in ALL models, the user can select a destination as nearest city or direct coordinates in raw LAT / LONG.
- With the premium bundle package - you have a far greater detail of map via the City Navigator SD card. This gives a more detailed UK road map, including all minor roads, and all small towns and villages.
- TRAINING ALERTS - the user can set TIME alerts (eg. every 30 mins for hydration), DISTANCE alerts for interval training (eg. alert every 5 miles with summary data review on screen). HEART RATE ALERTS - 5 x manually configurable heart rate zones, CADENCE alert - will alarm when user pedals less than minimum or more than maximum (user set RPM) and POWER ALERT - 4 x Power zones in user defined WATTS
- WORKOUTS - in our view, this is one of the most UNDERSTATED features of the Garmin Edge 800 and Garmin Edge 500. Using the Edge unit's TRAINING setting - simply "build" a WORKOUT. Start with the first STEP. Each STEP has a duration (time based, distance based or until HR / Power (if using Power meter) / calories is achieved). Within the STEP you can define a TARGET - HR, Power, Speed or Cadence based. At the end of a STEP you set the unit to REPEAT or move to next STEP... To put it bluntly, the Garmin Edge 500 / 800 allow you to custom build the PERFECT training session... all you need to do is follow it !!
- BEST FEATURE of Garmin Edge 800 ?? AUTOROUTING (not found on Edge 500). If you want MAPPING / ROUTING, then it has to be that.. it's just so simple... tell it where you want to go - and it will get you there with visual TURN by TURN guidance. With the basic IN BUILT base map you can navigate to a TOWN, for us in North Norfolk that would include Kings Lynn, Fakenham, Cromer etc ~ all fairly large towns with major "A road" connectivity. Add the City Navigator SD card (or the GB Discoverer SD card) and you now have POST CODE look up with ALL small towns and villages listed, and linked via all major and minor roads. If you are planning a road tour, or just expand your local on road horizons, then the premium bundle (package 4) with SD card City Navigator is EXCELLENT VALUE for money!! If you want to plan routes, and you want to include some OFF ROAD riding, then go for PACK 3 with Garmin GB Discoverer. The GB Discoverer still gives points of interest, post code look up and road name routing... the big difference is that with GB Discoverer loaded your route is overlayed on top of the OS maps... on City Navigator, it look more like a regular IN CAR GPS / Garmin / Tom Tom etc...
- The next best FEATURE would have to be * COURSES (also found on Edge 500). Most cyclists have a ROUTE that you do maybe once a week or so, a repeated loop to race yourself around. With COURSES you are doing exactly that, you will be paced around the course racing against a shadow of yourself. Just ride the COURSE once and save it with a memorable name, you can save several COURSES to mix it up a bit. Next time you go for a ride, decide on the COURSE - then press GO. You are now racing against your shadow, slowing down in the exact spot where you previously slowed down and speeding up in thew same places as last time.. you are clearly shown on the display if you are ahead / behind by TIME or DISTANCE... Garmin Courses is a GREAT feature... just don't do it every time you ride.. otherwise you'll crash and burn !!
