If you've got a Garmin Edge 705 or 800, and you want to plan a route - it couldn't be easier with the Garmin Basecamp software. It is a FREE to download software from www.garmin.com. It comes with a FREE basic Basemap, but it will also read any map DIRECTLY from your device, or a genuine Garmin SD card map.
We downloaded the software, took about 2 mins as it's quite large... installed the new Garmin BaseCamp application and got it to read a Garmin City Navigator SD card (via a universal card reader) - all in about 5 minutes... then simply click on "file - new route" then click and build your new ROUTE. When you've finished, either send it directly to the GPS device, or, even easier, send it to the SD card.
Works with BOTH City Navigator (ROAD) maps and OS TRAIL maps
Next time you turn on your Garmin Edge device the ROUTE is there for you to follow.
This really is BRILLIANT software... VERY easy to use - perfect for planning longer rides in unfamiliar areas. You could even pre-plan a full Lands End to John O'Groats ride, with 90 mile per day, 10 x pre-planned daily routes, all stored on the SD card.

The small route above was created with Garmin BaseCamp software - working from a City Navigator SD Card.
- Load City Navigator map / OS Trail (SD card) in to Garmin Basecamp
- Click on start point
- Click on major junctions, places of interest along route
- Finish route plan
- Send route to device or save to SD card
- Go ride ! and follow your new route
