The barometric altimeters
that are used in some of our most popular heart rate monitors are very
accurate, pressure sensing devices. They calculate altitude based on variations
in air pressure. They rely on an accurate base reference altitude to be
entered in to the unit prior to a training session. This way, the unit
will give an accurate, absolute, altitude throughout the session.
If there is a severe
change in weather over the forthcoming hours, then the outside barometric
pressure will change. This change in barometric pressure, may be seen
as a change in altitude. As an example: If the user set the reference
altitude to 100m and then left the watch on the desk for 1 week, it would
show altitude changes due to changes in barometric pressure.
These devices will
give an accurate trend to ascent and descent throughout a session, however,
for absolute altitude measurement, they rely on regular reference to known
data points. Please be aware of this and refer to user manual before using
your new device.
